Eczema is also known as atopic dermatitis. Eczema can sometimes be mistaken as looking like an allergic reaction. Eczema is a skin irritation caused by a combination of many different factors. These may include: genetics, abnormal function of the immune system, environment, activities that may cause sensitive skin, and defects in the skin barrier. This skin irritation may also be more likely in children born to older women, though it isn't clear why. There are also irritants that can make eczema worsen. Certain soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, and juices can cause the eczema to flare up. Even though eczema is not an allergic reaction, allergens may trigger the already-present eczema.
Eczema is NOT contagious.
